Andre Derain started off his career in art business, painting images such as the 8 you see here. These painting's look very child like, as if a child had painted them. Mainly because there isn't great detail in any of the paintings between 1905-1906. They just seem to be like blotches of paint scattered over the canvas, but made so that you can make out what the painting is about. One thing that all of the painting have in common and you can easily recongnise in all of these painting are that they all contain water and boats, apart from the very last painting he made in 1906, The Dancer. He was influenced to paint in this manner by Maurice de Vlaminck.

Between 1906 and 1912 Derains painting techniques drastically changed. From painting using blotches and dots of paint. He started putting a lot more detail in his painting making them alot more easier to understand and recognise. He moved away from painting scenes of water and boat yards to painting the counrtyside around him.

By 1913 Derain changed his drawing styles again. He started to draw human figures. In his earlier painting of people, he hadn't quite mastered the technique on how to draw the human body. So the majority of his early painting look rather false with flat faces and out of proportion.
1925........................... 1928........................... 1938........................... 1938...........................
As Derain came to the end of his career in the painting he moved again from painting clothed people, to painting women with bearly any clothes on or not at all. I particually like the painting "Portrait of Madame Guillaume, 1928." The reason i like this painting more than the others is that it looks a lot more life like unlike the majority of his painting.
